Psychological Background:
Rick's father was a psychiatrist
so it was expected of him to go into the field. He no longer drinks
alcohol due to having found he had a tendency to abuse the stuff and
during that time had black outs to which he doesn't remember what happened.
That was during college and it reminded him too much of his younger
years where he had tried to black out things that his mother did. He
did experiment with some other drugs during that time but nothing serious
and learned early on that it wasn't worth the risk. While in college
and doing his residency he'd blow off steam by playing at local bars
during amateur nights. He found this to be a great way to distress although
there were times he went days without sleep. After residency he settled
down and now only plays at home.
Personality Quirks: Likes to doodle
and will often do that while listening to patients, sometimes drawing
them but other times just images that come to his hand since he doesn't
really think about it. When he gets up in the morning has to have his
coffee and cigarette. He likes his caffeine and sugar as well. He will
survive on that more so then eating healthy.
History:
Rick grew up with a stay at home mother who wasn't always the most stable
of persons however he did manage to get through his early years. His
father is a noted psychiatrist and he had the pressure while growing
up to follow in the family footsteps. He tried to rebel when
he was in high school and college by playing the guitar. He found he
was good at it but he knew he wasn't good enough to go beyond the local
bars. When he did his residency he looked at several hospitals however
his father wanted him to go to the one he worked at. Rick made sure
to go elsewhere. He didn't want to be in his father's shadow. He was
determined to make a success on his own without his father's name.
During
his residency he found he had a real flair for psychology and in particular
being able to help terminal patients deal with their diseases. He decided
to specialize in this field. He found it very rewarding being able to
help those who might die accept it and those who did survive to celebrate
with them. He transferred to Ocean View after his residency wanting
to put a bit more distance from his family. He loved both his parents
but he knew they brought out the worst in him and he'd had enough of
that. This way he could be on his own and hopefully not have them in
his life anymore.
Over the years he's had a few girl friends and even a couple of boy
friends but nothing really serious. It was more fun time then anything.
The longest relationship he's had has been six months and that was back
during the time he had black outs.. He wonders sometimes if he is capable
of having a serious relationship but he figures he's only thirty he
has plenty of time for that. So for now he's more then willing to play
the field and just wait to see what happens.
